11월 1일의 탄생화인 서양 모과(Medlar)는 오늘날에는 거의 재배되지 않는다.
겨울이 되면 자연 숙성이 되어 부드러워지며 독특한 열매의 생김새 때문에 오래전 유럽에선 비하의 단어로 쓰이기도 하였다.

결코 아름답다고 할 수 없는 겉모습과 다르게 그 꽃말은 ‘유일한 사랑‘이다.
