Pungyeon (Beatbox Remix), a collaborative project between the National Gugak Center and composer George D.blue, borrows its motif from gilnorae (labor song) that was sung by seonsori stand-up singing troupes in Gyeonggi-do Province and the Gyeonggi folk song, Pungnyeonga. The music has been reinterpreted with a catchy rhythm and melody.
Gilnorae(Pungnyeonga) and beatboxing are classic examples of street music. Furthermore, the first syllable ¡°pung¡± in Pungnyeonga and the first sound in beatboxing, which begins with ¡°boom,¡± are both bilabial consonants. It is from these similarities that the remix of Pungnyeonga and beatboxing is born.
The upbeat, harmonious melody is the result of a heterophonic layering of the sounds of male and female voices (Namdo sori and Seodo sori) and 25-string gayageum over rhythmical beatboxing. Through variations, the sogeum plays the role of sigimsae (ornamentation) in the overall melody. As the main melody develops, the rhythm intensifies.
A cash register sound can be heard twice in the song, at 46 seconds and 65 seconds. Reminiscent of the famous line from the movie Jerry Maguire, ¡°Show me the money,¡± this sound effect is a witty expression of the meaning of pungnyeon, or a bumper year, in modern society. The intense plucking technique of the 25-string gayageum at the end is as impressive as the pluck synth, which is essential to EDM (electronic dance music).
This unique song mixes vocal sounds (Namdo sori, Seodo sori, beatboxing) and gugak instruments (25-string gayageum and sogeum), delivering a modern rearrangement of traditional music with pop and EDM sounds.
The deep, emotional expressions of Junsu Kim (Namdo sori), the crystal-clearvoice of Hyosun Jang (Seodo sori), and Ratino¡¯s dynamic beatboxing that grabs everyone¡¯s attention with the first ¡°boom, boom, boom¡±—this is truly a captivating, first-time experience.

If the former version of Pungyeon (composer Kyunghoon Park and 25-string gayageum Seyeon Park) (released December 21, 2020 & January 6, 2023) were the 12 songs written by Ureuk under the orders of King Gasil, then the new version, Pungyeon Remix, released in July 2023, can be regarded as the 5 songs revised by Ureuk¡¯s 3 disciples (Beopji, Gyeogo, and Mandeok) and sent by King Jinheung.
Ureuk, led to tears by his students¡¯ songs, exclaimed:
¡°It is entertaining, but not immoderate; sad, but not full of grief; it is worthy of being called right.¡±
